If you’re reading this you are bearing witness to the absolute peak of my unemployment.
Little sad jokey aside, something finally clicked for me a few days ago after sending someone yet another one of my Spotify playlists — why not make this a thing?
For context, I’m very into listening to music (yea yea who isn’t), especially on Spotify. Far too often I’ll put off watching shows and movies with the excuse that my brain is moving too fast to settle down my attention span, but hours of staring at the wall while I appreciate the ins and outs of a playlist I made 5 years ago? Something to zone out to while I vacuum the house? Romanticizing the Red Line or the DLR? Listening to music ticks all of those boxes for me, and I’m sure it does the same for a lot of y’all too.
Outside of Spotify, I love a good music mix on YouTube, whether that’s a three hour city pop compilation or the many gems that My Analog Journal has put out over the years. Whenever I’m not doing a TikTok cleanse I really enjoy following Margeaux whose content and playlist curations are out of this world. Similar to her, I love a playlist. And more than that, I love sending a playlist to my friends in hopes that they’ll take some time, listen, and enjoy a little peek into my brain. (Vice versa of course, please always feel free to let me know what you’ve been listening to.)
So, I’m thinking this will be a nice way of covering different bases — sharing my Spotify playlists in one place instead of copy-pasting/forwarding the same link dozens of times, tapping a *bit* into some informal writing, creating a little corner of the internet for friends to share music with each other? Here’s a bit of what that could look like [edited slightly on 19 march]:
Wynn’s Week in Music (every Sunday)
A roundup of what I’m listening to, whether that’s a particular song, an album, or maybe even just a Tiny Desk Concert or DJ set that I really liked from the week
Sharing new playlists that I made or came across
Medium and longform content (every other week)
Highlighting past playlists that I’ve created, talking about the songs on there, the kind of mood or atmosphere I’m trying to evoke
Deep dives into particular genres or even just putting my own playlists into personal and/or historic context
Creating and maintaining a slightly more aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly index of my playlists, to replace the google doc that I usually pass around.

Margeaux is great. Wish Nard made music playlists too, I know he'd have some deep cuts.
